Henry Peach Robinson - Fading Away (1858)
H. P. Robinson was well known for pioneering combination printing (multiple negatives or prints to form a single image, a sort of early photomontage). In Fading Away the photograph of a woman in swoon is combined with other images to create this emotive picture of a husband distraught at his wife’s death. It is a fictional photograph with great dramatic impact.

Ernest Hemingway once sent F. Scott Fitzgerald a typescript of “A Farewell to Arms”. Fitzgerald sent back ten pages of edits and comments, signing off with “A beautiful book it is!” You can see Hemingway’s first reaction above (signed EH).
Well said, Ernest!
